Alvarenga Alert Cancelled: Missing girl found

An amber alert has been cancelled after Manitoba RCMP say the missing eight-year-old girl, Luisa Alvarenga, was found safe in Winnipeg.

An AMBER Alert was issued for 8-year-old late Friday afternoon. RCMP confirmed that the girl was found safe just after 6 p.m. CT during a media briefing.

“Very happy she is safe and obviously will be returned to loved ones later this evening,” Chief Superintendent Mark Fisher with the RCMP said.

Fisher said how quickly Luisa was found is a great example of how efficient the Amber Alert system is.

“It’s been extremely effective,” he said. “We have obviously many eyes out on the street, far more than our police forces would be able to put on the street.”

Luisa is living with another family member in Portage la Prairie and police said her mother was not allowed to have contact with her.

Police said they received information earlier Friday of a possible sighting at the airport, which made them concerned.

The investigation into the incident and any potential charges against the mother are ongoing, police said.
