People taking statins to reduce cholesterol may feel a false sense of security and overindulge in unhealthy foods, according to a new study.

Statins are prescribed to reduce cholesterol and as a preventive measure for heart diseases. Millions of Americans are prescribed statins each year, either after a stroke or a heart attack.

Researchers found calorie intake went up almost 10 percent during that time, and fat consumption went up nearly 15 percent.

Researchers say two factors could be at play: doctors might be prescribing statins to people who eat more, or statin users don’t feel the same need to eat as healthy as they did in the past.
