Shanynthia Gardner was charged with multiple offenses overnight in connection with the stabbing deaths of her four children in southeast Shelby County, Tenn.
The killings, in Memphis, Tennessee, have been described as an ‘act of evil’.
Shanynthia Gardner, 29, has been charged with four counts of murder.
Shelby County’s Sheriff, Bill Oldham, told reporters: ‘This is an egregious act of evil that has shocked us to our core. I will never understand how anyone can do this.’
And Assistant Chief Deputy Mark Dunbar added: ‘I’ve seen a lot of bad stuff in 33 years, but this is the worst.’
Gardner will answer four charges of first degree murder associated with aggravated child abuse, four counts of first degree murder in association with aggravated child neglect, plus four more counts each of aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect or endangerment.
Neighbour Patricia Johnson said: ‘I can’t fathom that. What would babies do to make you do that?’
