Three in custody after suspected explosive device found in vehicle at BC border

The Abbotsford-Huntingdon border crossing was closed Thursday afternoon, after a routine search found what appeared to be an explosive device in a vehicle.

The agency said at about 6:30 p.m. that Abbotsford police were called and three people are in agency custody. The investigation is continuing, with police on site, but no other information was released.

The agency said that while traffic was flowing in both directions, travellers should still expect some delays.

Staff Sgt. Rick Stewart of the Abbotsford Police Department posted a picture of an “inert” grenade on Twitter, saying “Cutting through BC? Don’t have grenade in plain view. Closed border & called out EDU. No entry for u.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Jaime Ruiz says U.S. officials have been involved in information-sharing and are prepared to provide help if necessary.
