Pew Research : Americans Mediocre at Science

Pew Research Center developed a general science quiz to test the pulse of Americans in areas they should remember from school and areas that have been in the news. Each question comes with multiple choice answers, so that helps.

They conducted a study involving a 12-question quiz that tests common knowledge of science, covering topics like physics, geology and medicine. The quiz was given to more than 3,200 adults all over the country—and the results are certainly surprising.

Thirty percent of quiz-takers got either 9 or 10 out of 12 correct. But 30% of quiz takers also got only half or less of the questions correct. Uh oh.

College graduates and those with higher education degrees tended to do best, and depending on the question, quiz-takers who were 65 or older tended to do worse than their younger counterparts (those who were aged 18 to 29).

The questions are all topics we’ve covered in our school days—what does a light-year measure? Which of earth’s layers is the hottest? But all of this doesn’t necessarily mean the test is easy.

The tricky little quiz only takes five minutes, but some of the multiple-choice answers sure had us stumped.
