13 great white sharks were spotted in waters off Sunset Beach in Huntington Beach.

Just over a month after local officials closed beaches in San Clemente due to shark sightings, over a dozen young great white sharks were spotted off Sunset Beach, just north of Huntington by a police helicopter. The sharks, estimated between six to ten feet, were spotted about 50 feet from shore, Officer Jennifer Marlatt told the LA Times.

This is not the first sighting of great whites in North Orange County in recent months; on May 11th, six six-foot sharks were spotted in Huntington, and in April, officials issued warnings after two juvenile sharks were seen at Surfside, just outside the lineup.

Local authorities do not have an explanation of this increase in shark sightings in the area. Stay tuned for more as the story develops.
