Javier Rosas : Mexican Singer Critical After Mexico Shooting

Javier Rosas is fighting for his life following a drive-by shooting in his native Culiacan on Sunday (22Mar15).

Two people were killed, and two more were injured Sunday morning when assailants in a car opened fire on the 23-year-old musician with AK-47 rifles. According to Mexican officials, Arturo Rosas was shot six times in the attack, in the region of Sinaloa.

As a singer of narcocorridos, or songs celebrating Mexico’s violent drug gangs, Arturo Rosas had already been involved in a shooting — in December last year, security pulled him off stage when an audience member opened fire in a concert where he was performing.

Narcocorridos are criticized for lauding crime, and many, such as the mayor of the city of Chihuahua, seek to ban them. “Narcocorridos have promoted a feeling in public opinion, that translates itself as the naturalization of violence and certain customs in the language, images, and stories, as well as insecurity, uncertainty, drug-trafficking,” Mayor Javier Garfio said earlier this month.

Another narcocorrido singer was attacked during his own concert in February. Three people were killed.
