Animal killer Nicolino Camardi apologizes in open court

The acts of “stark horror” committed by a city man on a cat and dog should land him up to a three-year prison term, a prosecutor said Monday.

In December 2014, 19-year-old Nicolino Camardi entered a guilty plea to two counts of causing unnecessary pain to animals in connection to the January 2014 deaths of a Siberian husky and a domestic short haired cat.

The bodies of the animals were located within a week of each other in an alleyway in the 200 block of 99 Ave. S.E. A veterinarian determined the deaths were the result of starvation as the animals had muzzles fastened to their heads.

On Monday, the convicted animal abuser addressed the court room.
“I understand what I did was horrible,” said Camardi. “If I change the people I hang out with, stay sober, I can be a good person.”

“I know I can change.”

The Crown prosecution is seeking a sentence of between 30 and 36 months with credit for time served as Camardi was a heavy drug user and is a risk to commit violence in the future.

Camardi’s counsel counters with a suggested sentence of between 12 and 18 months. With credit for time served, Camardi would be released this summer as he has been in custody for 10 months.

The Crown and defense have agreed to a three year probationary period during which time Camardi will undergo alcohol counselling and drug rehabilitation.

Sentencing for Camardi is scheduled for Friday, March 27, 2015.
