School Bus struck by gunfire in South Seattle.

Police later said the buss appeared to have been hit by BBs, not bullets, which damaged two windows on the bus

No children were on the bus that was hit, according to the school district. The driver was not injured.

Police said they believed that pellets from a BB gun, not bullets, hit the bus. They searched a nearby home and reported that witnesses said teens had been playing with a BB gun in the area.

The district said on Twitter that the driver heard a noise, then saw that two windows on her side of the bus had been shattered.

The shooting occurred around 3:40 p.m., when school lets out. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, at 44th Avenue South and South Holly Street, went on lockdown.

The district said about 4:25 p.m. that police were helping children leave the school from the north exit to be picked up by parents and buses. Children who walk home had to stay at the school for a while, but the lockdown was lifted about 5 p.m.

Children at Graham Hill Elementary and Aki Kurose Middle School also were briefly sheltered in place, the district said. Those schools are about a mile from Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary.
