Amanda Lang met journalistic standards, CBC says

CBC’s senior business correspondent Amanda Lang’s journalism adheres to the corporation’s journalistic standards, the public broadcaster said Thursday following a review.

Lang came under fire after news website Canadaland alleged she tried to influence coverage of RBC and temporary foreign workers.

Lang, host of the business program The Exchange, also acknowledged a personal relationship with an RBC board member and was paid for speeches at RBC-sponsored events.

In January, the CBC said it would no longer allow its on-air journalists to receive payment for appearances at external events, citing “a changing environment in which the public expects more transparency.”

The review was ordered by CBC News general manager and editor in chief Jennifer McGuire, who handed the task to Jack Nagler, director of journalistic public accountability and engagement.

A third party analysis by Cormex Research, which examined media coverage of major Canadian banks including Lang’s RBC coverage “…was in keeping with observed norms among other comparable broadcast outlets covering the banks,” the CBC said in a statement released Thursday.

“The review did surface that there is a range of interpretations around CBC’s policy regarding disclosure of real or perceived conflict of interest.”

    1. The 3rd party should not have a taxpayer funded broadcast
Every time I tune to CBC there is no sound from my right speaker

    2. since when is the taxpayer responsible for third party broadcasting? and just so you know, the term “transparency” in any current event is an oxymoron at best, all smoke and mirrors!
