Metro Vancouver and B.C.’s South Coast woke up to snow in the ground for the first time this season.

About two to five centimetres of the white stuff fell in the Vancouver area.

A multi-vehicle crash closed the eastbound lanes on the Trans-Canada Highway near Gaglardi Way in Burnaby on Saturday morning, backing up traffic.

Weather was also likely a factor in a crash that sent two people to hospital Friday night with serious but non-life threatening injuries, according to officials.

A car and minivan collided at 222nd Street and Fraser Highway in Langley and crews had to cut the roof off of the car to free the injured occupants. Paramedics called for air ambulance but bad weather prevented it from taking off.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to Langley RCMP.

The crash shut down the intersection for a number of hours while police investigated.

Northbound lanes were also shut down for hours on the Coquihalla Summit because of a collision. DriveBC said the route reopened just after 5 p.m.

According to ICBC, winter conditions nearly double the number of collisions from October to December.
