Eliahs Kent : Halifax man apprehended after mistaken release – Update

Eliahs Kent, a man charged with attempted murder who was mistakenly released from the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside on Friday, was recaptured on Saturday afternoon.

Halifax Regional Police arrested Kent in Spryfield after a brief foot chase.

Kent was accidentally released from the Burnside jail on Friday while awaiting trial for attempted murder, robbery and other charges.

In an interview, Staff Sgt. Reid McCoombs of Halifax Regional Police said Kent was in police custody Saturday evening and would be back at the jail in Dartmouth’s Burnside Park by Sunday morning at the latest.

McCoombs said the man, who the authorities have said is dangerous, was apprehended by police after a foot chase.

“We were checking an address (in Spryfield), and he came out an alternate door,” he said. “Officers saw him, and gave foot pursuit and were able to catch him very quickly.”

Kent is due in court soon on various charges, including attempted murder, home invasion, attempt to commit robbery, robbery, robbery to steal a firearm, using a firearm in the commission of an offence and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The charges stem from a break-in at the home of an elderly Dartmouth man. The victim tried to prevent two intruders from breaking into his gun-storage cabinet, and was hit over the head several times with one of his own rifles.
