US : Two wolf harvest zones remain open

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officials are closing another wolf hunting zone after closing two hunting zones on Sunday and another the week before. Only two grey wolf hunting zones remain open.

The DNR says Zones 1, 2, 4 and 5 are either closed or will be closing to hunting and trapping of gray wolves by this evening.

Wolf hunters and trappers are advised that they can currently continue to pursue wolves in Zones 3 and 6.

When additional zones are closed, the DNR will announce such closures by news releases, online notifications or by phone message at 855-299-9653.

This year, the state’s natural resources board approved the Wisconsin wolf season quota of 156 as proposed by the DNR’s Wolf Advisory Committee. That means only 91 animals would be hunted since the state’s Chippewa tribes are entitled to half of the permits and they oppose hunting wolves.

The quota was set with the intention of continuing to reduce the state’s wolf population in accordance with the goals identified in the wolf management plan. The new limit is a decrease from 2013’s quota of 275.
