One of the most important new features of the iPhone 6 is all but confirmed, yet has not grabbed many headlines ahead of the handset’s official unveiling.

According to the Guardian, one expert in particular strongly believes Apple will use the ultra-tough Sapphire crystal glass for the iPhone 6’s display. The handset is expected to launch this fall and several leaked images and videos have claimed to know its various specifications.

A leaked video shows Marques Brownlee attempting to damage the flagship sensation of Apple with the aid of knife and keys. He even tried to bend the screen under his foot. Professor Neil Alford, from department of materials at London’s Imperial College, has authenticated the material to be Sapphire glass.

The Sapphire glass is extremely hard, scratch resistant, and carries very high elastic modulus. If Sapphire is made thin enough, it can be bent enormously since it contains great strength. These facts were presented by Professor Alford.

The Professor Alford also added that the manufacturing company would try to make iPhone 6 from different crystal cuts of Sapphire. They will have to do some sort of lamination also. Some strain may also be induced in the surface of the glass that would lend it extra strength.

The company has previously applied for a patent related to lamination of sapphire that indicates its plans for using the material for its upcoming flagship.
