US : Florida beaches face dangerous rip currents

Watch out for dangerous rip currents this Memorial Day Weekend. That’s the warning that came from the Volusia County Beach Patrol. Lifeguards made about 100 rescues on Sunday alone.

Most of these rescues were due to strong rip currents, which prompted them to fly a red flag on lifeguard stands. Beaches in Volusia were also at capacity for parked cars on the beach Saturday and Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, steady easterly winds will help to push a long period swell into coast waters. Combined with high tide, the threat is expected to be highest from now until about 4 p.m.

The NWS advises patrons to swimmers to stay within sight of a lifeguard tower at all times and to obey all instructions given by ocean personnel.
