K-9 Dog Mick Killed in Portland Shootout

A Portland police officer was wounded, his K-9 partner killed and three suspects captured after a burglary and shooting in Southwest Portland early Wednesday morning.

The gunman fled after the shooting and an intense manhunt that followed stretched from Capitol Highway and Southwest Lobelia Street to the 6900 block of Oleson Road. The shooting suspect was eventually captured about three hours later.

According to the police, Dorn would like the community to know that “Mick saved my life.”

Mick just recently joined the K-9 Unit after completing the extensive training program required to become state certified as a police canine.

Police say Dorn remains in the hospital and is continuing to recover from gunshot wounds to both legs. He and his family are very thankful for the outpouring of support by fellow police officers, their families and the community at-large. The family is asking for complete privacy at this time.

“We’ve had two officers shot in the past month protecting our community. Today’s incident is a reminder of how dangerous policing can be. I’m very grateful that Officer Dorn will recover from his injuries and saddened that we lost one of our K-9 partners,” said police Chief Mike Reese.

By coincidence, the other incident also took place in Southwest Portland, when an officer was wounded in a shootout that killed a kidnapping and bank robbery suspect.

“We are saddened by the death of Mick, but heartened that Officer Jeff Dorn is doing okay and is in good spirits,” said Mayor Charlie Hales. “I visited Jeff and his family in the hospital this morning to voice our thanks for his service.”
