Two officers killed, One injured in Palm Springs shooting, police say

Two police officers have been shot dead and another wounded in Palm Springs while trying to resolve a family dispute.

The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old, John Felix of Palm Springs. Felix received non-life threatening injuries during this incident and was treated at a local hospital.

Felix will be booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center, located in the city of Riverside, on two counts of murder on a peace officer.

Sheriff’s Deputies confirmed via Twitter they had taken Felix into custody before 1 a.m. Sunday after a lengthy standoff.

The RSO said Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes will hold a news conference in front of the PSPD at 11 a.m. Sunday regarding the arrest.

Palm Springs Police has confirmed that two Officers have been killed in a shooting.

A third Officer has been injured. There is a subject at large in Palm Springs and there is an active search.

The shooting happened on the 2700 block of Cypress Ave. and Del Lago Ave at around 1 pm Saturday afternoon.

A code red alert was sent to residents in the area to shelter in place.

The two Officers killed are Jose Gilbert Vega a 35 year veteran and Lesley Zerebny who had just returned to work from maternity leave. She has a 4 month old baby. Zarebny was married to a Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Jose Vega was ready to retire in December and was not scheduled to work today, but decided to work overtime. Vega is survived by his wife and eight children.

A female called police to get help with an adult son. When Officers arrived they knocked on the door but the man would not open the door. Ten minutes later an emergency call was broadcast from Officers that shots were fired.

All 3 Officers were transported to the hospital where two were pronounced dead. The third Officer is alert, doing well and working with investigators.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Division has taken over the investigation.

Desert Regional Hospital was on lockdown on Saturday while the Officers were being treated.

Residents were asked to stay out of the area during the search.

A procession with hundreds of emergency vehicles and helicopters escorted the two fallen Officers from Desert Regional Medical Center to the Coroner’s Office in Indio. The bridges and overpasses along the way were lined with Officers, Firefighters and citizens paying respects to the fallen Officers.
