Two dead after plane crash east of Winnipeg

Two people died after a plane crash near Deacon’s Corner and Highway 15 on Friday morning.

The Transportation Safety Board says the crash happened at about 10 a.m. today but won’t say how many people were on board the plane.

Springfield fire Chief Jeff Hudson says the Piper PA 28 came down in a rural area near Deacon’s Corner and Highway 15.

He says the plane took off from the tiny Lyncrest Flight Centre.

“We get quite a number of reports of possible plane crashes because it’s a very busy flight centre,” says Hudson. “We take them all seriously but it’s very seldom does it turn into something like this, which is unfortunate.”

He says firefighters extinguished a small fire from the wreckage, adding that arriving at the crash site was disturbing because the flying community in the area is a tight one.

“We spend a lot of time with them, visiting their functions and stuff, and we do the fire inspections there,” he says. “I know a lot of the people personally there. We don’t like to attend any of these type of events… but the guys are professionals.”
