A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries after driving her car over the edge of a steep cliff on Signal Hill in St. John’s Sunday morning, according to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

According to the latest news reports, the woman is described as being in serious condition after her vehicle left a carpark on Signal Hill and went over the cliff, before coming to a halt some way down. The incident forced the closure of walking trails for several hours as firefighters and a towing company tried to haul the vehicle back up.

“Thank God there wasn’t anyone in the car when it stopped on the cliff. Supposedly the lady had ejected before it went over,” said witness Jim Fitzgerald, who uploaded photos of the stricken car onto Facebook.

Fitzgerald observed the incident unfold from Fort Amherst, a point opposite Signal Hill.

“The Fire Department’s high-angle rescue team are definitely not paid enough,” said Fitzgerald.
