AHS investigates diarrhea cases at Edmonton school, Report

Alberta Health Services says it is investigating a “cluster of diarrheal illness” among students at an Edmonton-area school.

While Alberta Health Services spokesman Kerry Williamson couldn’t confirm which school it was and how many students were affected, he says it’s a bacterial infection called shigella that causes diarrhea.

“No source or linkage has yet been determined. We have two lab confirmed cases of shigella, and are investigating other cases of diarrhea that may or may not be related,” says Williamson in an email to 630 CHED.

Williamson says there are typically 40 cases per year in the Edmonton zone and it’s spread through food sources or person to person contact.
