Emily Blunt: “British actress” apologizes for comments about GOP debate

Emily Blunt says she regrets telling reporters she reconsidered her American citizenship following the first GOP presidential debate.

The Sicario star revealed at the Toronto International Film Festival that a debate had been televised on the same day she went through the official ceremony with her American husband John Krasinski.

“We watched the [Republican] debate and I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?’,” she said.

“I’m not sure I’m entirely thrilled about (becoming a American).”

The comments caused a huge backlash online and also angered some US television show hosts.

Fox presenter Anna Kooiman was particularly angry: “You know what, then why don’t you leave Hollywood, California.

“Let some American women take on the roles that you’re getting, because Americans are watching your movies and lining your pockets.”

On Thursday Blunt appeared on the Today show to set the record straight.

She said: “It was so not the intention to hurt anybody or cause any offence, so I really apologise to those that I caused offence.

“It was just an off-hand joke. I think I’ll probably leave the political jokes to [talk show] Late Night or something.”

Sparks flew between controversial billionaire Donald Trump and other Republican contenders for the 2016 presidential race as they met this week for their second live TV debate.

Blunt and Krasinski have been married for five years and have a daughter called Hazel.
