Roller Coaster Death: Man Killed By Ride While Looking For Phone

OHIO Cedar Point will be open today as an investigation continues into the death of a man who died after being hit by a roller coaster Thursday.

Officials say James Young, 45, of East Canton, climbed into a fenced, restricted area of the Raptor roller coaster to retrieve an item and was struck and killed by the ride.

Sandusky Police and the county’s coroner are investigating the death.
Park spokesman Bryan Edwards said the tragic accident happened around 5 p.m.

“A guest entered a restricted, fenced area of the Raptor roller coaster and was struck by the ride,” Edwards said. “Park safety officials responded immediately to the situation.

” Unfortunately the guest has passed away.”

Edwards said the park is cooperating with authorities.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time.”

No other injuries were reported.

Young lists his occupation as being a teacher at Louisville schools on his personal Facebook page. A Walsh University graduate, he also attended the University of Akron.

The Raptor is closed while the investigation continues.

The $12 million coaster opened in 1994 and broke a number of world records at the time.

It is located just off the park’s main midway and reaches a top speed of 57 miles per hour and turns its riders upside down six times.
The coaster is among the park’s most popular attractions.
