US man and 12-year-old grandson die during hike.

Authorities on Wednesday found the bodies of a 12-year-old boy from Prescott Valley and his grandfather who went missing Tuesday in Sonoran Desert National Monument east of Gila Bend, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Thomas Gillespie, 63, worked for 23 years at the TAP High School for pregnant and parenting teens, according to TUSD spokeswoman Vanessa Hernandez.

Gillespie was reportedly hiking the Mormon Battalion Trail with his grandson, Robert Miller, 12.

Authorities believe Gillespie may have suffered a medical event or encountered weather-related issues, and that Miller may have left him to get help.

Miller, who is from Prescott Valley, had their car keys with him when he was found.
