Nuns count blessings after being stuck in elevator in Rome (Video)

Two nuns have survived being stuck in a Rome elevator for three stifling days by praying and drinking their own urine.

The 58-year-old Irish woman and a 68-year-old New Zealand nun became stuck on Friday when the elevator stopped suddenly while taking them to the bottom floor.

It appears the lift became stuck after an electrical power failure.

The nuns shouted for help but everyone had left the Marist Sisters’ convent on Via Aurelia for the weekend, Il Messaggero reported.

Adding to the problem — neither nun had a mobile phone with them to call for help.

The pair were stuck in the lift until Monday when a cleaner raised the alarm.

“Is there anyone there?” one of the officers called out, while his colleague climbed the stairs.

“Yes, we are here in the lift,” the nuns replied.

Police were able to use a special set of keys to activate the lift and free the two women.

Once freed, the nuns thanked the two police officers and said they had “prayed so much” while trapped in the lift.

The women, who were guests of the Marist Sisters, were shocked but in good health, and were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for dehydration.

A nun who answered the phone yesterday at the order’s headquarters sighed deeply and said in English: “We are OK, but we are not talking to the press. Thank you for your concern. Goodbye.”
