Daniel Woodall : Edmonton police officer killed in shooting

Edmonton’s police chief has confirmed an officer has died after he was shot when police were executing an arrest warrant for criminal harassment at a home in the Callingwood area in west Edmonton.

Constable Daniel Woodall, 35, was shot a number of times after approaching a house near 186th Street and 62nd Avenue in Edmonton on Monday night.

His colleague Sergeant Jason Harley, 38, was shot in the back, but survived the attack.

As reinforcements were called, the house burst into flames. The gunman is thought to have died in the fire.

Police later said they were “no longer looking for a suspect”.

Mr Woodall, a father of two, was recruited from Greater Manchester Police eight years ago to serve with Edmonton Police Service’s hate crimes unit.

He was the first officer to be killed on duty in Edmonton for 25 years.

Sgt Harley was treated in hospital for a gunshot wound and later released.

Chief Rod Knecht said the two officers were trying to arrest a man wanted for criminal harassment.

“This is a tragic night for the Edmonton Police Service and our city,” he said.

“I am extremely saddened to have to announce the death of one of our officers and the serious injury to another officer.

“On behalf of the entire EPS family, our condolences go out to their families during this tragic time.”
