Mum Says She Was ‘Lunch Shamed’ By School For Giving Her 5-Year-Old Daughter Oreo Cookies.

Leeza Pearson was out of fruit and vegetables one day last week, so she tucked a pack of Oreos in her daughter Natalee’s lunch and sent her off to school at the Children’s Academy in Aurora, Colorado.

Pearson thought nothing of it, until her daughter came home with a not from school, admonishing her for packing the cookies in the lunch.

The note read:

“Dear Parents, it is very important that all students have a nutritious lunch. This is a public school setting and all children are required to have a fruit, a vegetable and a healthy snack from home, along with a milk. If they have potatoes, the child will also need bread to go along with it. Lunchables, chips, fruit snacks, and peanut butter are not considered to be a healthy snack. This is a very important part of our program and we need everyone’s participation.”

Pearson could not believe how the school handled the situation.

“I think it is definitely over the top, especially because they told her she can’t eat what is in her lunch,” says Pearson. “They should have at least allowed to eat her food and contacted me to explain the policy and tell me not to pack them again.”

Officials at the Children’s Academy have not made a comment on the matter so far.

While the school hasn’t commented on the controversy, ABC9’s Jessica Rae and Scott Larson have. The two discussed whether they sided with the school, or if they stepped over the line. And we want your opinion on the matter. Head over to our Facebook page and comment on the story. And keep it tuned to ABC9 This Morning to watch Jessica and Scott discuss hot topics like this one.

    1. Hey Leeza, NUTS to the school district! Having cookies once in a while is called a TREAT. All kids can have a treat now and again, and unless Oreos or whatever are specifically prohibited by the school, the “lunch lady” should stay the heck out of your kid’s lunch bag.
