Avril Lavigne : Pop star reveals she was diagnosed with Lyme disease

Avril Lavigne is opening up about battling Lyme disease, something she discovered she had last October while celebrating her 30th birthday.

‘I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move,’ said the 30-year-old who lives in Ontario.

‘I thought I was dying,’ added Lavigne who urged her fans to pray for her when she went off the radar.

‘I could barely eat and, when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed,’ the star said. ‘My friends asked, “What’s wrong?” I didn’t know. I had no idea a bug bite could do this,’ she told America’s People magazine.

‘There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.’

And, despite keeping her fans in the dark, she said the responses to her cryptic messages kept her going. Lavigne sent only one private message to a fan saying she wasn’t feeling so good before it went viral.

What is Lyme disease?

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread to humans by infected ticks.

Early symptoms include a rash around the bite area, tiredness, headaches and muscle or joint pain.

If left untreated it can cause neurological symptoms, such as temporary paralysis of the facial muscles, and in its later stages can cause symptoms similar to those of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome.

‘The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply and now I’m 80 per cent better,’ she added.
