Officer suspended without pay in Tina Fontaine case : Winnipeg Police

No criminal charges will be laid against two Winnipeg cops who had been in contact with Tina Fontaine after she was reported missing and just hours before she disappeared.

But one officer has been suspended without pay while police undergo internal disciplinary proceedings. The other remains on administrative leave.

15-year-old Fontaine’s body was found in the Red River on August 17 of last year. No arrests have been made in her murder.

An internal police investigation looked into whether the two police service members knew it was Tina Fontaine they came into contact with on August 8, and if they did, whether or not they followed protocol when dealing with a missing youth.

Police have not disclosed the results of that internal investigation, but forwarded the results on to Manitoba Justice Prosecutors to see if charges should be laid under either the Criminal Code or the Child and Family Services Act.

In December, the Crown said they would not proceed with charges.

No other details will be released by police as the disciplinary proceedings are ongoing.

Police say the investigation into Fontaine’s death is ongoing. They have interviewed numerous people and conducted a number of forensic tests.
