Environment Canada: High winds, heavy rain forecast

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of heavy rain and some high winds today and into tomorrow.

A rapidly intensifying disturbance over the Southern United States is setting its sights on Ontario. It will track toward Lake Michigan overnight and cross Northeastern Ontario on Monday.

Rain at times will be heavy and arrive this evening in Southwestern Ontario. It will quickly spread to all other regions overnight. Rainfall amounts of 15 to 30 milometres are expected before it tapers to showers on Monday.

As this weather system crosses the province on Monday, strong winds will strengthen to 50 km/h, gusting to 70 or 80 out of the southwest. Localized gusts to 90 km/h are possible in some exposed areas.

Winds of this magnitude may bring down some limbs or the odd tree, and cause sporadic power outages. Wind warnings may be required.

The very mild weather will come to an end later on Monday. Temperatures on Tuesday will be much colder across Southern Ontario with highs only a few degrees above the freezing mark.
