Janina Kolkiewicz : 91-year-old alive in morgue 11 hours after ‘death’

Janina Kolkiewicz spent 11 hours in cold storage after her family doctor declared her dead.

On Nov. 6, 91-year-old Janina Kolkiewicz “was confirmed to have been dead by a family doctor before she was taken to a morgue, where staff noticed the body bag she was covered in was twitching from movement,” details The Independent.

Janina Kolkiewicz, who is now home with her family and doing quite well, was scheduled to be buried the next day. Dr. Wieslawa Czyz, the doctor who declared Kolkiewicz dead, says he is “stunned” by the news.

“I checked the pulse on the forearm artery, carotid artery also,” the doctor told Polish media outlet TVN, according to CNN. “I listened to the heart, to the breathing. I also examined the pupils. There were no reflexes. Typical symptoms of death.”

Janina Kolkiewicz’s death certificate has since been declared as invalid. Police have launched an investigation into the chilling mystery.

“Apart from complaining of feeling cold, Ms Kolkiewicz – who has late-stage dementia – told her relatives she felt ‘normal, fine’ after returning home, although she cannot remember what happened and asked for a hot cup of tea before eating some pancakes,” details The Independent.
