Luka Magnotta murder trial hears from Harper’s deputy chief of staff

Jenni Byrne, Stephen Harper’s deputy chief of staff, told the court she knew something was wrong when she was going through a partially opened package delivered to the party’s headquarters and was overcome by a “very bad smell.”

Inside she found bright pink tissue paper and something wrapped in a black garbage bag. Inside that bag was a black wine gift bag with something rectangular inside, Byrne told Quebec Superior Court.

“It was soft, mushy,” she said. “I clipped off the top (with scissors) and there was a very bad smell.

“It seemed like it was something rotting.”

Byrne didn’t look in the bag, which held Lin’s severed foot. She called police.

About 15 to 20 officers arrived at the Albert St. building. Among them was Chantal Pombert, a member of the forensic identification unit.

Pombert took photos of the macabre discovery, which was then packed in a Styrofoam cooler and sent to the morgue.

That same day, police were notified that another package, destined for the Liberal Party of Canada, was intercepted at the Canada Post plant. Both parcels had the same return address and the name Renée Bordelais on them.

The note inside the second package read, “You need to speak to Laureen Teskey and her family! Lots to hide!”

Inside was Lin’s left hand.
